HGV Driver Medical Information
UK law requires all applicants applying for a first HGV ( lorry) or bus (PCV) licence Group 2 to undergo a medical assessment. These are to ensure you are fit and well enough to drive. You can find more information at the DVLA and apply for a HGV/ PCV medical online.
A GP or a Doctor who is registered with the GMC can perform these medicals. All of our GP s and Occupational Health doctors at Occupational Health Bristol can perform these medicals on site at Occupational Health Bristol, Shirehampton.

FAQs
Who needs a HGV medical?
You are required to undergo a medical assessment if you are:
– Applying for your first licence to drive a lorry (HGV) or a bus (PCV).
The minimum age is 21 for a Group 2 lorry driver medical or 24 for a bus driver medical
Group 2 licences must be renewed every 5 years or at age 45 years, whichever is earlier until the age of 65 years when they are renewed annually without an upper age limit.
Some licences require earlier renewal due to medical reasons
How often do I need a HGV medical?
The frequency of medical assessments for HGV/PCV drivers is as follows:
– When you first apply for your licence.
– Every 5 years or at the age of 45 years, whichever is earlier.
– Annually (every year) from the age of 65.
What do I need to bring to my HGV medical?
To your medical appointment, please bring the following:
– The official DVLA D4 medical form.
– Photo identification (e.g., passport or driving licence).
– Your driving glasses or contact lenses, along with your latest prescription.
– A list of any medications you are currently taking.
– Any relevant letters or reports from your specialists or hospital.
Who can carry out a HGV medical?
A registered doctor with a full General Medical Council (GMC) registration can complete the D4 medical form. This can be your own GP or a doctor at a private clinic that provides this service. The doctor must have access to your medical records or a summary of your medical history to complete the form accurately.
How long does a HGV medical take?
The medical assessment typically takes around 30 minutes. This includes a review of your medical history, a physical examination, and an eye test.
If you wear glasses or contact lenses and require these to drive an Optician may be required to fill out their section of the form.
Certain medical conditions that affect your eyes also require an Optician to complete the first section of the form. It is sensible to take your D4 form to your Optician prior to the medical if you have any queries regarding this section.
Can I drive a HGV with diabetes?
Yes, it is often possible to drive a HGV if you have diabetes. However, this is subject to strict DVLA criteria to ensure you can drive safely. The rules depend on the type of diabetes and how it is managed (e.g., with diet, tablets, or insulin). You will likely require more frequent medical reviews and must demonstrate good control of your condition. It is a legal requirement that you declare any medical conditions, including diabetes, to the DVLA.
Can I drive a HGV with epilepsy?
Driving a HGV with a history of epilepsy is subject to very strict regulations. Generally, you must be free from any epileptic seizures for 10 years without being on anti-epilepsy medication. The DVLA will assess each case individually, and you must inform them of your condition.
Can I drive a HGV after I have had a heart attack?
You must stop driving for a specified period after a heart attack and inform the DVLA. You can usually return to driving a HGV, but only after you have recovered and met the required medical standards, which may include having a satisfactory exercise tolerance test and an assessment by a cardiologist. The minimum period you cannot drive is typically 6 weeks, but this can vary depending on the severity of the heart attack and the type of treatment you received.
