FAQs

What is the difference between an ML5 and an ENG1 medical?

The main differences relate to the type of vessel and voyage, and who performs the examination:
– ML5 Medical: For seafarers on vessels operating in UK domestic waters. The assessment is based on a self-declaration form which is then reviewed and signed by any GMC-registered General Practitioner.
– ENG1 Medical: This is a more comprehensive medical examination required for seafarers working on merchant ships or for those undertaking international voyages. ENG1 medicals can only be performed by a doctor specifically approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Who can perform an ML5 medical?

Any doctor who holds a full registration with the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) can complete the medical examination and sign the ML5 report. This can be your own GP or another private GP.

How long does an ML5 medical take?

The appointment for an ML5 medical typically takes around 30 minutes. This includes reviewing your completed form and conducting the necessary physical examination.

What do I need to bring to my ML5 medical appointment?

You should bring the following items to your appointment:
– A completed ML5 report form (with Part B filled out by you).
– Photo identification (e.g., passport or driving licence).
– Any glasses or contact lenses you use.
– A list of any medications you are currently taking.
– Details of any significant ongoing or past medical conditions.

Can I fail an ML5 medical?

Yes. If you have a medical condition then you can automatically fail your ML5 medical this simply means that your medical is then reviewed by the MCA and they will review your medical to ensure you are safe to perform your duties with the medical conditions or medications that you are taking. This referral process is standard and many seafarers pass the referral process.

What happens if I fail my ML5 medical?

If the GP finds you medically unfit, they will not issue the certificate and will provide a reason. The completed form will be sent to the MCA for a final decision. The MCA may issue a full certificate , a restricted certificate or confirm that you are unfit.

Can I appeal a decision?

Yes. If the MCA declares you unfit following a review of your ML5 report, you have the right to appeal. This involves seeking an independent medical review from an MCA-appointed medical referee.

How often do I need an ML5 medical?

The ML5 medical certificate is valid for a maximum of 5 years. However, a shorter period of validity may be issued depending on your age and any underlying medical conditions.
