Plant operative medicals, are designed to ensure an employee is medically fit to operate heavy machinery and equipment safely on site or within the work place.

They are also known as safety critical medicals. Plant operative medicals, are designed to ensure an employee is medically fit to operate heavy machinery and equipment safely on site or within the work place.

These medicals are for any employee whose work is ‘safety-critical’, particularly those who operate heavy plant and machinery. This includes, but is not limited to:

What is involved in a Plant Operative Medical?

A typical plant operative medical assessment includes: – Health questionnaire: A general health Questionnaire reviewing past and present medical history. Any medication taken is reviewed. A family history and risk history is also taken.

– Blood pressure and pulse check.

– A Cardiovascular and Respiratory examination heart and lung examination – Vision assessment: Near and distance vision, visual fields and colour vision are examined. – Hearing test (Audiometry): This is performed in our Audio booth or can be performed on site – Musculoskeletal assessment: To assess physical ability for the role.

– Urine test: Typically checking for glucose and protein, which can indicate underlying diabetes or kidney issues.

How often are Plant Operative medicals required?

The HSE recommend that these medicals are performed every two years or earlier if any restrictions are present. After 60 years of age these medicals are annual

They also recommend a repeat medical after a sickness absence of more than one month (30 days) or after a significant illness, one that may or could affect the worker’s fitness to operate workplace transport.

At Occupational Health Bristol we charge 135 pound for a Plant Operative medical. For companies with more than 20 staff we can provide these on site.

At Occupational Health Bristol we can do these at Shirehampton Health Centre, Shirehampton – just off the M4/M5. Near Avonmouth docks and only 3 miles from the city centre.

We can provide on site medicals for companies who have over 20 employees requiring Plant medicals.

A number of other Occupational Health Providers also perform these medicals and you can ensure they are competent to perform these by ensuring they have their Diploma of Occupational Health, SEQOHS approved or have an equivalent Nursing Occupational Health Diploma.
