Protecting Your Workforce Under UK Regulations
Asbestos remains a significant occupational health risk in the United Kingdom. Despite its ban, asbestos-containing materials are still present in many buildings constructed before the year 2000. For workers who may disturb these materials, the health risks, particularly the development of serious lung diseases, are considerable. This is where statutory asbestos medicals play a vital role.
Why Are Asbestos Medicals Necessary?
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, employers are legally required to arrange medical surveillance for employees involved in licensable or notifiable non-licensable work with asbestos. These medical examinations serve two primary purposes:
1. Early Detection: They help in the early diagnosis of asbestos-related diseases, which can improve prognosis and quality of life.
2. Health Record: They establish a baseline of an individual’s respiratory health and create a long-term health record, which is a legal requirement.
Who Needs an Asbestos Medical?
Any employee undertaking licensable or notifiable non-licensable work with asbestos must undergo a medical examination. This includes trades such as:
– Demolition and construction workers
– Plumbers and electricians
– Roofing contractors
– Asbestos removal specialists
A medical examination must be carried out before an employee is exposed to asbestos for the first time. It is then repeated at least every two years for the duration of their employment in this type of work.
What Does the Medical Involve?
The examination is conducted by a licensed medical practitioner. It typically includes:
– A detailed questionnaire covering occupational and medical history.
– A clinical examination focusing on the respiratory system.
– A lung function test (spirometry) to assess breathing capacity.
Following the examination, a certificate of fitness is issued, and a record is kept for at least 40 years.
