If you work on a UK-based vessel your career relies on being fit and safe at sea. The ML5 medical certificate is there to support you. It confirms your ability to work in a physically demanding maritime environment whether you are serving as master of a small commercial vessel a crew member on a domestic passenger ship or working aboard a fishing boat under 24 metres.

The good news is that the process is straightforward. Any GMC registered GP can carry out your check, and it usually takes around half an hour including a quick physical examination.

Bring your completed health form identification and any glasses or medication details to make the experience smooth and stress free.

If something arises in your medical, you have a fair review process. Your case may go to the MCA, and many seafarers still gain certification following this final assessment. There is also an appeals route if needed.

A valid ML5 certificate gives you peace of mind and keeps you earning doing the work you love on the water.
