Bristol’s maritime heritage continues to thrive. From domestic passenger vessels to small commercial ships working from our ports, the safety of crews remains a priority. One essential requirement for many roles at sea is the ML5 medical certificate.

This medical assessment confirms that anyone operating on a UK-flagged vessel within domestic waters is healthy and fit to perform their duties. It is particularly relevant for masters and crew of smaller vessels under 200 gross tonnage and under 24 metres in length as well as domestic passenger ship crews and those working on fishing vessels under 24 metres.

Unlike the more intensive ENG1 medical reserved for international seafarers, the ML5 focuses on the health needs for UK-based operations. It is carried out by a GP who is fully registered with the GMC which means access is simpler and faster for local crews.

Appointments are usually completed within around 30 minutes including a physical check and review of your self-declared medical form. Your certificate is typically valid for up to five years depending on age and health status.

For Bristol businesses working on the water, ensuring staff remain certified is not just a legal compliance responsibility. It is a guarantee of operational safety and professionalism in one of our city’s most historically significant industries.
