For many in Bristol’s logistics and transport sectors, keeping large goods moving safely is at the heart of daily operations. Yet behind every competent HGV or PCV driver sits something equally vital. A medical assessment that proves they are fit to take on the responsibilities of driving some of the largest vehicles on our roads.
At Occupational Health Bristol, we see first-hand how often drivers and employers underestimate the importance of these medicals. They are not a formality. They are a legal requirement and a core part of maintaining a safe, compliant and reliable workforce.
Why these medicals exist
The standards for Group 2 licences are intentionally rigorous. Before a driver first applies, they must complete a medical and later renew it at set intervals. This ensures that issues such as vision changes, blood pressure, diabetes or cardiac health are identified early and monitored appropriately. These factors can significantly affect road safety and must meet DVLA requirements to keep a licence valid.
What our clinicians actually do
Drivers often expect a quick check of eyesight, yet the assessment is much more comprehensive. A GMC registered doctor reviews the driver’s health history, current medication and any relevant specialist letters, completing the official D4 form in detail. A physical examination and vision assessment are included, and where certain eye conditions exist, an Optician may need to complete parts of the form.
Our role in supporting Bristol employers
For many organisations, delays in securing medical appointments can bottleneck recruitment or prevent existing staff from returning to work. By providing HGV medicals on site in Shirehampton, our clinic removes those barriers. Our occupational health doctors understand the pressures employers face and ensure medical assessments meet DVLA standards efficiently and accurately.
Medical conditions need not be barriers
A diagnosis such as diabetes or a previous heart attack does not automatically prevent someone from holding an HGV licence. With the right documentation, stable management and DVLA oversight, many drivers continue working safely. Our clinicians guide drivers through their obligations and provide the clarity employers need when planning operations.
Keeping Bristol’s transport sector safe
Every completed medical contributes to a safer transport system for Bristol and beyond. For employers committed to high safety standards, partnering with a trusted occupational health provider ensures compliance never slips through the cracks.
